Structural Heart Disease Fellowship Position Description
This one-year Structural Heart Disease fellowship program provides training in structural heart disease decision making and interventions to outstanding fellows who have already successfully completed basic interventional cardiology training. The fellowship is based at the Oregon Health and Science University Hospital, a tertiary referral center serving the Oregon and Southern Washington States. The facility has state-of-the-art interventional facilities for coronary and structural heart disease procedures. The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.
Duties and Responsibilities:
As a member of the Knight Cardiovascular Institute, you will report to the Program Director and the Dept. Chief and be responsible for duties in the areas outlined below.
Education: a. Fully participate in post-graduate Structural Heart Disease Fellowship program, obtaining the below skills required to become proficient and competent in the care of patients suffering from complex valvular heart diseases, develop a deep understanding of the pathophysiology and literature that inform our treatment, and participate in clinical and/or basic research to help further the communal knowledge of complex valvular heart diseases. In addition, these core competencies, individuals will also learn about, and become expert in the following:
Trans-catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with Edwards (SAPIEN 3), Medtronic (Evolut Pro) and Boston Scientific (Lotus Edge) trans-catheter valves
Aortic valvuloplasty
Trans-catheter mitral valve repair (Mitraclip)
Trans-catheter balloon mitral valvuloplasty
Trans-septal puncture and intracardiac echocardiography
Exposure to Left atrial appendage closure (Watchman)
Pulmonary artery sensor implantation (CardioMEMS)
PFO/ASD/PDA closure (Cardioform, Amplatzer)
Para-valvular leak closure
Alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Ongoing advanced coronary work (chronic total occlusion, multivessel disease, atherectomy, etc.)
Advanced LV support (Balloon pump, Impella, ECMO)
Exposure to cutting edge EFS and Pivotal clinical trials in the field of SHD
The Structural Heart Disease fellow will be expected to publish a minimum of two case reports or preferably original research manuscripts in the field of structural intervention or invasive hemodynamic assessment in collaboration with an attending cardiologist. A variety of ongoing research projects are currently available. The SHD fellow will gain competence in CT image analysis for TAVR planning as well as DICOM-based image sharing for research and clinical purposes.
OHSU is a teaching facility and you will be expected to teach medical students and residents in the clinical setting as well as through assigned lectures to be given during the course of the year. You will receive your teaching assignments from the Program Director &/or the Chairman.
Clinical: The Program Director will assign your clinical schedule. You will work as an instructor within the department. The clinical schedule will be determined based on the resident/medical student schedules and the specific procedures and assignments taking place therein.
Administration: Administrative and other duties may be assigned based on department needs and your area of expertise and interest.
Prerequisite training/selection criteria:
Completion of three years of general cardiology fellowship plus one year of interventional cardiology fellowship in a Training program accredited by ACGME. 2. Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. must meet the following:
Have a valid certificate from the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates
Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
Completion of three years three years of general cardiology fellowship plus one year of interventional cardiology fellowship.
Be able to meet licensure requirements of the Oregon Medical Board, and
The candidate shall have three letters of recommendation (one from the candidate’s Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program Director).
