The Registered Nurse is administratively responsible to the Cardiology Nurse Manager. The staff nurse at this grade/level has developed and acquired the clinical experience and knowledge to be proficient in nursing skills, practice, and procedures caring for the medical and surgical acutely and critically ill patients and their families. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Advanced knowledge of equipment, medications, and supplies used in the Cath/EP lab and the ability to set-up, calibrate, operate, and troubleshoot this equipment. Knowledge and understanding of waveforms from the great vessels and all chambers of the heart including the ability to recognize and distinguish normal from abnormal, artifact from abnormality, and forewarn the physician of impending life-threatening situations. Monitor patients during catherization/EP procedures, including continuous ECG and hemodynamic monitoring, identification of cardiac arrhythmias, response to medications, titration of vasoactive IV medications and treatments. Document patient data during procedures and maintain procedure log. Administer medication, including ACLS medications and anticoagulants utilizing all safety precautions. Administer moderate sedation with appropriate patient monitoring, assessment, and documentation. Operates complex radiographic, angiographic, and digital recording equipment. Participate in sheath removal post-procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of IR procedures and equipment to include fluoroscopy, CT, ultrasound, EKOS, MRI etc. Acts as a liaison/collaborator between nursing, technologists, radiologists, lab, MD's, etc. Maintains current knowledge of Fluoroscopy/CT/MRI Safety. Performs iSTAT Lab Tests. Competent in reading and interpreting ECG strips; and identifying abnormal and lethal rhythms.
