The Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization) works in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Portland VA Health Care System in Portland, Oregon. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Grade Determinations: GS-09, - Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization) In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-8 full performance level, positions at this grade may be lead, supervisory, or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments. Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of cardiac catheterization technician services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. Ability to manage and supervise employees. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. Preferred Experience: Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS), American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT), or Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist (CVT) preferred. Cath Lab, Electrophysiology Lab and/or Interventional Radiology experience within the past 5 years preferred. ["The duties of the Medical Instrument Technician include but are not limited to the following: Scrub, circulate, and operate both electrical and physiologic monitoring equipment as well as single plane / bi-plane fluoroscopic equipment etc., for the most complex examination and treatment procedures including procedures such as endocardial biopsy, cryoablation and radio frequency ablation procedures, intra-aortic balloon pump, and ventricular assist devices, as well as transcatheter aortic valve replacements for very critical patients. Inject contrast manually or with the aid of a mechanical contrast device to visualize anatomical structures during angiography procedures in accordance with physician orders. Mentor and train lower graded technicians, nurses, nursing students, and cardiovascular technology students on cardiac Invasive Cardiology procedures and assist the supervisor/manager with quality control and performance improvement activities. Write policies and standard operating procedures. Implementation and evaluation of equipment, technology, and new interventional techniques are integral components of the role. Performs invasive cardiovascular procedures utilizing highly complex and technical monitoring equipment under the direction or prescription of a qualified physician. Proficient in the use of physiologic analytical equipment during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Operation of the highly technical monitoring equipment includes monitoring, calibrating, and collecting data of physiologic changes during the procedures, while maintaining a sterile field and utilizing aseptic techniques as required in an operating room setting. Has training and certification in advanced life support and are competent to recognize life-threatening changes during procedures. Have further training and knowledge to provide radiological support, using fluoroscopy during the procedures. Must be able to be on-call and fulfill the obligations of on-call status.
